We’ll meet you at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport and our charter coach will whisk you away to Gubbio, Umbria’s northern jewel, widely considered to be one of the best-preserved medieval towns in all of Italy – an absolute delight for artists, photographers, and sightseers (did we mention truffle lovers?). You’ll join your fellow Sojourners for a welcome reception and orientation followed by a lavish dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants.

We’ve timed our visit to coincide with one of Italy’s most exciting festivals – the Corsa dei Ceri Picolli – an ancient celebration that introduces Gubbio’s children to the traditions of their ancestors. It’s a spirited event with lots of pageantry, and you’ll be right in the midst of the action in our Fifteenth Century palazzo, now one of the town’s finest four-star hotels with all modern comforts and conveniences.

After six nights in Gubbio we’ll head south to Assisi for a visit to the Basilica di San Francesco, one of the most unique and dramatic of Italy’s great churches, exuberantly decorated with Giotto’s ground-breaking frescoes. After lunch we’ll stop at Santa Maria Degli Angeli to step inside the rustic stone chapel where St. Francis began his preaching ministry.

Our Sojourn continues to Spoleto, another wonderfully preserved medieval hill town, home to many significant archeological sites dating back to Roman times. It is stunningly picturesque, from its Fourteenth Century castle to the breathtaking Ponte delle Torri, an ancient bridge in one of Italy’s most dramatic natural settings.

You’ll stay in the finest family-operated four-star in town, ideally situated in the historic center, where you’ll have plenty of time to browse the numerous shops and galleries, and relax with an espresso or aperitivo at a sidewalk cafe’.

Spoleto’s churches and museums are filled with masterworks, and you’ll be treated to a guided tour of the impressive Duomo, including a behind the scenes description of the mysteries surrounding Filippo Lippi’s frescoes in the apse. You can join Matthew and Barbara on a day trip to Spello, a charming nearby hill town, to see Pinturicchio’s magnificent frescoes in the Baglioni Chapel.

Enrollment is limited and room priority (with views in Gubbio) will be given to early applicants, so we encourage you to register right away. Please read below for complete details.
